Is giving up carbs necessary for losing weight?

I keep hearing that to lose weight and be healthy I need to give up carbs, but I also noticed that most Asians - who eat lots of rice and noodles - are thin and healthy. And no, I'm not talking about people in poor countries who are starving. Look at folks in South Korea, or in Japan - where they have the longest life expectancy in the world.

People in Asian countries aren't just avoiding obesity. They're living longer and doing it better, too. Countries like Japan have lower rates of dementia and Alzheimers than western nations like the United States.

They also seem to age more slowly.

Sure, many Japanese who live stressful city lives might not fare as well as those who live in more rural areas, just like over here… yet even so, it always seems like they look younger than they truly are, doesn’t it?

Part of that might be all that fish they eat, but I keep coming back to the fact that they eat rice and noodles without suffering from all the consequences all the gurus promoting diets like keto and paleo are telling us. That got me thinking. Maybe we don't need to completely cut out carbs, maybe we just need to eat them in reasonable amounts.

Japan is pretty healthy, but look to one specific part of Japan - Okinawa.

Recent studies have shown that the residents of Okinawa are some of the longest living people on the planet.  Not only do they live well past 100 with remarkable regularity… they don’t look like they’re that old either.  On top of that, these long-lived Japanese have trim bodies free of unsightly fat deposits.

That makes sense, though, when you look at it.  After all, the healthier your body, the less likely you are to contract some life-threatening disease like diabetes, heart disease, cancer and even Alzheimer’s.

One significant reason for this is that many Okinawa islanders still live on a special diet that has been around for thousands of years.  A diet free of modern preservatives, artificial sweeteners, synthetic foods and other junk that we get every day in the U.S.  Long ago, these Japanese learned to eat and live in harmony with their body’s natural rhythms and processes.

Of course, thousands of years ago, they didn’t have any science to tell them this.  They simply ate naturally and through time, discovered what worked and what didn’t.  Today, though, things are different!

I recently read a story about a marine who lived with a family on Okinawa during World War 2. He had been shot down by the Japanese, and some farmers nursed him back to health. That gave him a chance to learn about the kinds of foods and exercise people did in Okinawa. In the process, he learned how to stay healthy and lose weight quickly but safely.

What's really interesting is that the lifestyle habits he learned about go against everything we supposedly know about diet and health. You don't have to radically ban entire food groups to benefit, and you don't need to kill yourself in the gym either.

With everyone going around asserting that you can't eat carbs or on the other end of the spectrum living as strict vegans, a moderate approach like this - proven by the centuries of healthy living in Japan and on Okinawa - sounds more reasonable. They've been living this healthy lifestyle for centuries. That convinces me, as far as proof goes, compared to the newest diet fad.

And its a lot easier to follow that something heavily restrictive like keto, in my opinion.

There is so much misinformation out there when it comes to weight loss.  Things that we’ve all been conditioned to think are necessary and that in some cases not only don’t work but actually harm your body.

Heavy cardio:

For years the experts have been telling us to exercise until we drop! But have you noticed a lot of people exercise without losing weight? One reason is your body triggers you to eat a little more when you exercise a lot. It needs the extra energy to do the exercise. Look I'm not saying exercise is bad. Most people just aren't going to lose weight all that easily relying on exercise alone - or God forbid - combining exercise with calorie restriction. And very vigorous exercise like running tons of miles every week isn't necessarily good for you. The fact is that no matter how fast you run, you’re only burning 100 calories per mile.  Also, continuous hard running is bad for the joints and even builds up scar tissue on your heart and can even lead to a heart attack!  And the sad fact is that as soon as you stop running, your metabolism drops back to normal too.

Eat less:

It seems like common sense. If you eat less you'll lose weight. And the experts are still peddling this even though it never seems to work very well. Things turned out to be more complicated than anyone imagined, because the body shuts down and goes into famine mode to preserve itself when you don't get enough calories day-in and day-out. You can even end up breaking down healthy muscle tissue as the body seeks out new ways to generate energy.

Not to mention that on a traditional diet based on calorie restriction, people find themselves feeling unsatisfied. When you don't get enough to eat you feel tired and grouchy.  The end result is people give up on the diet and end up heavier than when they started.

No carbs:

Yes, this one is BS too.  Your body can function on "ketosis" but its designed to use carbohydrates for energy.  Just because it can use some alternative means of energy production, like when you're living in the ice age and don't have access to plants most of the year, it doesn't mean we should adapt that kind of lifestyle or that it's healthy.

Of course, you certainly should cut down on eating too many unhealthy carbs. Like potato chips, sugary drinks, ice cream and corn muffins.  Yet if you work in harmony with your body and are getting the right kind of exercise, even starchy carbs like rice, pasta and potatoes are actually good for your body and will help you lose weight!

So don’t let the people trying to sell you expensive gizmos and put you on long-term high-cost diets fool you.  There is a simple, easy, safe and highly effective way to lose weight and look and feel great.  You don’t have to run until you drop, spend 2 hours every day in the gym, starve yourself or eat bacon 5 times a day!
