For the past 50 years the government - following the advice of so-called "experts"- has been telling us to avoid eating fat. But are they really on our side?
Ever since the health craze began in the 1970's, people have been trying to eat low fat and whole grain foods. We were advised to avoid eggs and eat lean cuts of meat. And what happened? People got fat. And keep getting fatter!
Worse, the fact that many food products are advertised as healthy makes it all too tempting to overeat. If you're eating a skinless chicken breast and low-fat ice cream for dessert, why not indulge a little? These foods make us think that we're eating healthier and we can even eat more of them. But is that really true?
Despite the rise of new diet fads like keto and Atkins, you still see the labels all over the grocery store:
“Reduced fat” and “Fat free”
I't sad but true - the reduced fat and fat free craze has driven more people into being overweight or obese than could have been imagined. Part of the reason is that temptation to overeat I mentioned earlier. If you're eating real cookies, most folks will eat one or two. If they're told they are reduced calorie or low fat cookies, many people can't resist eating hand fulls.
And they think because they're eating something that is "low fat" they're living a healthy lifestyle.
Nope, sorry to bust your bubble, but that’s not true.
Sugar-free is another problem that's developed over the past 50 years. Scientists concocted some crazy chemicals in the lab that sort of taste like sugar, but do you think its really a good idea to fill your body up with saccharin or aspartame day-after-day? Recently, to everyone's surprise, they found out that people that drink diet sodas sweetened with that stuff actually gain weight!
That said, most everyone is starting to agree that sugar is the problem. That doesn't mean you have to go on an extreme Keto diet, however. You see the problem is when you remove too much fat from food, to make it edible you need to add something else. More often than not that "something else" is sugar.
Next time you're at the grocery store, browse the salad dressing aisle and look at the low fat dressings. Note how much sugar they contain. You may as well put ice cream on your salad! And yet, people think having a salad with some sweetened "vinaigrette" is healthy. Truth - it's not.
Most processed foods have been enhanced this way. Is it any wonder that so many people are becoming diabetic? And so many others are getting fat?
Unfortunately, sugar is far far more destructive to your body than fat. It’s even been shown that sugar can be more addictive than cocaine. And the excess calories provided by all that sugar quickly gets converted into fat cells. Not only stored on your stomach, rear end and thighs - but also and stored in the pancreas and liver as glycogen. That can cause all kinds of health problems, the least of which is diabetes.
So the next time you hear a leading health expert complaining about McDonald’s French fries, step up and ask them why it’s okay to put massive amounts of sugar in food.
Just check the ingredients on your favorite can, bag, bottle or box. See where sugar is on the list. Keep in mind that ingredients are listed from the most to the least in quantity, so if sugar, corn syrup, malto dextrin or other sweeteners are above #4… you’ll know why dropping a few pounds is so tough.
